Anoop Desai - True Colors
Nooper Troopers!!
Here is the awesome video of Anoop's performance of "True Colors" (originally by Cindy Lauper) on Year You Were Born Week of American Idol. ENJOY!!!
Round-Up of Anoop Reviews for "True Colors"
Anoop Desai apologizes for being a bit snippy to Kara last week; it's ridiculous, who cares; he was fine, he's human and isn't always perfect. Sheesh.
Says he was born in 1986, "same day as David Cook." Singing "True Colors," good pick for his voice; let's hope he gives it an insightful creative spin like Cook would.
Wearing a colorful sweater; voice really soars sweetly on the chorus. Nothing super-unique about the way Anoop's singing it, it just really fits his tone and his sincerity comes through. His best performance since country music week; a bit pitchy on some of the high notes, but it's who he really is. Nice little trill at the end, too.
Randy says you pulled it back and it was hot, you can actually sing, a very nice controlled vocal. Kara likes it too, took a pop song and gave it some soul. Paula calls the choice flawless, the phrasing beautiful.
And Simon -- "like a singing yo-yo," last week bad, very good this week. Not fantastic, but good; and then tells Anoop "don't apologize for reacting to what we say." Ah, Simon, dead on like always.

I was afraid for Anoop when I heard he’d be performing a Cyndi Lauper classic, but shame on me. I need to have faith in Anoop. He vocally slayed the song. The slower arrangment meeting his tender voice was like heaven for the ears. I’ll never doubt him again. The judges loved it but they kinda annoyed me with their critique. It was like they’re just now noticing Anoop has one of the best voices in the competition. Get with it!PhoenixNewTimes.com
Of course Anoop was a ridiculously adorable baby and of course Mr. and Mrs. Desai are still incredibly adorable. What’s more surprising was Anoop’s genuinely good version of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” which I expected to be cheesy but was actually really pretty. It was such a 180 from last week’s horrible “Caught Up” that it was almost confusing. The judges mostly liked it (Simon called him a “singing yoyo”), and I think he firmly placed himself in the top four performances of the night.SeattleTimes.com
Anoop Desai sang Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors," from 1986, the year of his birth. The song's a little slow for my taste, but the tone of Anoop's vocals sound really good tonight -- maybe the best I've heard him sound. And certainly the best of the night so far. Way to go, Anoop! Some of that Tar Heels mojo came your way!NJ.com
After a patented Damage Control Seacresterview, in which Anoop apologizes profusely for being snotty to Kara last week, Anoop goes with a song choice that's all about saying, "That jerk last week isn't who I am; these are my true colors!" After Adam, Anoop probably has the best pure singing voice of anyone else who's left, and while the arrangement got a little dull in the middle, the falsetto was great, and he sang it with the same passion he brought to his great "Always On My Mind" performance on Country Night. Now if Anoop can just find a way to do an uptempo number without ticking off the judges, all will be right with the "Idol" world.
Anoop didn't try to do too much with the song, and that worked out for him really well. It wasn't a copycat version; it was Anoop -- soulful and heartfelt.
A guy singing a song originally sung by a girl is a risky move. The average male singer usually does it as a sign of confidence in his singing skills or as a joke during drunken karaoke night. Fortunately Anoop is in the first category as he sings with the emotional depth of a diving pool. Thankfully, he does not copy Cyndi Lauper's feminine pitch. I enjoy listening to his interpretation and do not even compare it to the original Cyndi Lauper because they sound so different despite having the same lyrics and melody. He has a smooth voice that easily shifts from the low notes to the emotional belting notes. I hate to use the "American Idol" cliché but he does make the song his own. Probably the worst thing about Anoop's performance was the awful choice to wear a horizontal green striped shirt. It screams, "My mother still dresses me." Nevertheless, this is a singing competition and hopefully fashion assistance will be included for the winner.Examiner.com
I hope he survives this week's elimination. But if Anoop is voted off "American Idol," he could easily guest star in an episode of "House" as a very distant relative of Kutner. Maybe the writers could give him songs for Anoop to sing while House plays piano. And it would be awesome.
Anoop Desai wore jeans and a green and white striped cardigan, giving him a slightly preppy look. He performed Cyndi Lauper’s classic True Colors. I have to give him props for taking on a signature female song and putting his own flavor on it. While the tempo and pacing were a bit rushed, Anoop Desai showed vocal control and a pleasing tone. The performance had a sweet and vulnerable quality. The phrasing was mature and lyrical. It was nice to see him strip down to the bare elements and to just focus on the vocals.TheWrap.com
Anoop apologized for his insolence during last week’s critique. No need, Anoop. It gives you an edge -- sexy! (Perhaps Gokey could take a page from your book and tarnish his halo a bit.) Then he was back to his strongest suit -- ballads -- on “True Colors.” While he is always laughably sincere in his interpretation of songs like “Beat It,” for instance, it never seems to come across the way he intended. Anoop is not the tough guy; Anoop is the tender guy. At least that is the Anoop that America votes for.MSN
Beaming with Tar Heel pride, Anoop Dogg threw down another masterful ballad with “True Colors,” first recorded by Cyndi Lauper. It was a subdued version, to be sure, but it showed off Anoop’s melodic vocals without any of the distractions of his awkward Usher-wannabe impulses. When this college a cappella veteran reins in his musical ambition and chooses to deliver something more radio-lite, instead of something in-your-face R&B, he really shines... Anoop, having turned in one of the strongest performances of the night, should expect to avoid the bottom three Wednesday night.EW.com
Anoop Desai got his groove back. No, I’m not making a Taye Diggs reference — although now the urge to repeat Wilhelmina Slater’s insta-classic line about the actor from a recent episode of Ugly Betty has become all-consuming — but how sweet was it to see Anoop prove his musical mettle by adding a healthy dose of sway and a little smidge of swagger to Cyndi Lauper’s simple ballad? And not only that, the contestant voted least likely to impress me with his falsetto back in Motown Week actually delivered a soaring and darn-near perfect high note at the end of his performance. I’m sure it did his confidence a world of good when he was finished to hear Randy declare (with a great sense of shock): ”Dude, you can actually sing!” Yes, thanks judges, you’re the ones who used the Wild Card round to advance Anoop into the competition! So why is his baseline talent level coming as a huge shocker to ya? I’d have been more impressed if the judges had caught ‘Noop Dawg’s lyric flub (substituting ‘’so strong” for ‘’so small”), but that would’ve required them to pay attention for a whole 90 seconds. And trust me, they don’t get paid enough for that!”
